If you living in Greece but you are a UK pensioner, you have to lodge an application through the International Pension Centre (IPC) in the UK for an S1 form by calling +44 (0) 191 218 7777. The form will be sent to you which you have to fill out and send to the EOPPY office in your locality. The EOPPY will take the form and give you a health booklet which is renewed on yearly basis by EOPPY. If you are in receipt of pension, you can name your spouse as your dependent and if you do that, your dependent is qualified to send an application to the Pension Services for S1 form for issuance of a separate health booklet.

Greece has both private and public hospital and medical centres of different standards. However, the standard of nursing and after-care services provided in these medical facilities may not be on a par with the standard provided in the UK.

Partnerships both for a man and woman relationship or same sex relationship are not accepted in Greece unlike in the UK. Given this, you cannot list your partner as a dependent.

Healthcare in Greece for tourists

If you are planning for a travel to Greece, you have to obtain an EHIC before you leave Britain for Greece. Most UK post offices or the UK Department of Health provide the EHIC on request without charging any dime. If you want to get the leaflet "Health Advice for Travellers", you have to call 0845 606 2030. If you are relocating from the UK to Greece, you should let the IPC know of your change in circumstances. In this way, you will not encounter any problem with the payment of your pension. If you are claiming your pension in Greece, you are required to obtain and complete a form from the Pension Services so that your pension will be credited directly to your bank account in Greek. While completing the form, you are required to provide all the details of your bank account and return the form to the Pension Service. Life certificate for UK state pensions     

You are required to give a quick reply once you receive a life certificate from the pension service of UK so that your benefit will not be stopped. But you have to get a witness to sign it before sending it back to Pension Service. It is not everybody that can sign as a witness on the life certificate. At end of six month, visitors from EU are no longer entitled to a tax free circulation of vehicle in Greece unless they qualify for a second period which will require them not to be in Greece for a minimum period of 185 days with their vehicles packed in a sealed location stipulated by the custom authority. Apart from the direct family members (husband, wife or children) of the owner of the car, no other person can legally drive the car freely within the period of six months allowed for free circulation because the entitlement is strictly personal. At the expiration of the six months period allowed by the authorities of custom, EU visitors are required to the do the following:

2. Return the car to their home country
3. If you continue using your car at the end of the six months grace given without clearing it through the custom, you may be fined for each of the additional days use the vehicle after the expiration of the six months. Depending on the number of days the car was driven after the expiration of the 6 months, the fine can be very high and the vehicle may be seized. If the vehicle is seized as a result of the violation of the provisions of the Greek Law as described above, the car will not be released until the owners accepts to re-export it or clear it through the customer. Permanent importation of vehicles. Change of residence certificate

If you a citizen of a member country of the EU and you have lived in another member state for a minimum of two years but you want to relocate and reside Greece as your country of residence, you will not be required to pay VAT or pay for any of the following registration in Greece:

1. car registration (privately owned and used car)
2. mobile caravans
3. motorcycles
4. pleasure craft

If you are an owner of such a vehicle, you are required to go to the custom authority closest to your home within 30 days from the date the car was imported in order to apply for the exemption from registration and VAT payment. A special Greek registration plates will be granted to the owner of such vehicle once the request is made. The Vehicle Technical Control Centre (KTEO) of Greece subjects all vehicles entering the country to test. Any person that brought in a vehicle into Greece in the manner described above is forbidden from transferring, pawning, leasing, lending or assigning the vehicle to any other person unless custom authorities give approval for that. If such a vehicle is lent out, leased, transferred or hired out before the expiration of a year, the total amount of tax due will be collected from the person.
